Bike -Once in transition find your bike and change for the cycle. Put on socks, shoes, t-shirt if not using a tri suit. All athletes must have the torso fully covered (not arms) and any zips on tops must be fully done up. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR BIKE unless your helmet is on and fastened. Congratulations you have finished your GO TRI triathlon.                       WELL DONE.

TENW Relay Race Rules

·         Teams must have at least 2 team members and a maximum of 4 team members.

·         Teams should be made up of 2 boys and 2 girls but male and female only teams are accepted, in the same triathlon age category (TS, T1, T2, T3, Youth and juniors. Mixed age group teams are allowed but be careful of the distance for the younger age’s groups.

·         Race distances will be half that of a standard Triathlon for any particular age group.

·         Each team must complete 4 “mini triathlons” in the order swim, bike, run, swim, bike, run, swim, bike, run, swim, bike, run.

·         A team member must complete the triathlon in swim, bike, and run order. Each team member must do a full triathlon before passing to the next team member. Any team short of 4 athletes, can have another athlete from the team complete a second mini triathlon.

·         A team is made up of athletes from any club.

·         Team members do not have to be a member of a triathlon club to participate in this event.

·         Team members do not need to be members of Triathlon England to take part in this event.

No North West Junior Series points will be scored at this event but counts towards the achievement certificate

If children do not know enough people to form a team please e-mail me at Paul.Ekgren@sky.com with your name, date of birth, gender and I will try and put children together to form teams. Hopefully this will avoid children missing out on this competition due to being a team member short.

When entering this Relay event the entry system is designed to have ONE entry per team and each team should have a Team Manager [see notes in Appendix 1 below to find out why]. E-mail addresses of all team members will be taken by the entry system so that everyone that is entered gets a copy of all race literature, start times, waves etc….  The cost of entry for all teams is £50 per team. Please make sure you read Appendix 1 as this describes how the relay part of this event will work. This is simple in concept but a relatively complicated event to describe in words. If anyone still has any questions about how the event is going to work after reading this document please e-mail me at Paul.Ekgren@sky.com so I can make any necessary updates to this document so that everyone can benefit from the clarification.

Parking

Parking is in the Leisure Centre car park, there is ample space to park but please be respectful to other center users and members of the public.

Arrival Time and Registration- Registration will be open at 8:00 am and close no later than 10 am and operate on a rolling basis allowing competitors to arrive just 60 minutes before their race.  As there are a small number of entries, please arrive in plenty of time for registration, bike racking , course familiarization etc. especially if you have not raced at Blackpool before. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RIDE THE TRACK BEFORE THE EVENT DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS.

This is a complex event to manage but as entries are low racking can be done by all athletes entered. Wooden racking on the floor where you will place your back wheel and will stand up your bike. 1 set of racking for each team so all team members’ rack at the same place.

Due to building work on the Academy playing fields this year’s course will be different to previous years or races here at Palatine Leisure. The swim section remains the same, the cycle section is now done of the 600 meter section of the cycle track and the RUN is now on the 400 meter section of the cycle track to the left hand side of the track. The run course has been difficult to design and locate it but should make everything compact and spectator friendly.

Spectator Vantage Points

Swim

There is a large, elevated tiered section of seating at pool side with excellent views of the pool. After the swim, you will be able to come down the stairs and exit the rear of the building through the 2 fire doors. From here make your way to the viewing areas, taking care when crossing the run course.  Please familiarize yourself with this route before the event.

Bike

The bike leg is inside high security fencing on a 1km circuit. Due to the enforced run route change the cycle leg will be laps of 600 meters. There are many vantage points for spectators along this stretch, outside the fencing, but the small section around transition will be secure and there will be NO ACCESS to parents/spectators.  ONLY competitors and marshals will be allowed inside the bike race circuit. Spectators can watch on the tarmac on the left hand side only after the big green gates (previous transition areas) and after crossing carefully on the right hand side path like normally.)

If children in a team want to share a bike as opposed to each one bringing their own to the event then this is possible. COUNT YOUR OWN LAPS.

Run

The run leg has now been changed to the bottom section of the cycle track. Running in an anticlockwise direction of 400 meters per lap. The finish will be to the right hand side of the track and in front of the spectator area under the inflatable.

Refreshments

Snacks and cold drinks will be available from the Palatine Leisure Centre vending machines as not financially viable to run THE CAFÉ with our small numbers and for 3 hours. Please note currently NO HOT DRINKS.

Changing Facilities and Toilets

There are ample changing facilities and toilets within the leisure center and lockers.

Chip Timing

The race will be chip timed. The First athlete will be given the Teams timing chip at race briefing before the swim start. Marshals will be on hand to assist. If you lose your timing chip there will be a charge of £35 levied which must be paid immediately. Only 1 chip timing will be used and the chip will be passed like a baton from athlete to athlete at the end of their current leg.

Registration

Can Team Managers please register their teams?

At registration the Team Manager will be given (all in one envelope):

·         One small label to be worn by the Team Manger so as to allow them into the Transition Area and Handover Areas. This should be visible at all times.

·         One race numbers for each competitor. Numbers should be on the back for the cycle and front for the run. Race belts can be used and advisable but make sure numbers are visible.

A small label number for each competitor’s bike helmet.

Appendix 2 - Race Distances

If an athlete is doing consecutive triathlons [run to swim] they will get ready for their swim in Handover Box 1 and leave their running gear on pool side at the head of their lane where they are going to get out. This was last year’s where you can change legs but won’t effect this year’s event as each athlete has to complete a full mini triathlon before passing to the next athlete.

All a team’s swims will be done in the same lane.

The next athlete that is going to do the swim will be in handover box 1 kitted out ready to swim. I.e. they will have their swim gear on, hat on, goggles on their head or at least to hand. As soon as they have changed their timing chip by the athlete that has finished the run they can go to where they will start their swim. Swimmers must lower themselves into the water gently NO DIVING ensuring no other swimmer is nearby. As soon as this is done they can start the swim. There is strictly no running on pool side.

Run to swim transitions

When there is a change of triathlete for the next leg they must CHANGE THE TIMING CHIP (TEAM MANAGERS CAN HELP) before the next triathlete starts the next leg.

Athlete 4 completes run and bears right with other team members to finish arch.

Athlete 3 completes run and continues to changeover Gazeebo and passes timing chip to athlete 4.

Athlete 2 completes run and continues to changeover Gazeebo and passes timing chip to athlete 3.

Athlete 1 completes run and continues to changeover Gazeebo and passes timing chip to athlete 2.

2.1 Handover box 1 (which will be just inside the fenced area (old transition area)

The handover point will be on the Grass half way between the big green gates and the track under the triathlon England Gazeebo.

2.   Hand over points [changing from one athlete to the next]

-      Athletes are in the right place at the right time

It will be the team managers’ responsibility to ensure

All 12 legs must be completed by someone in the team to finish the race.

Each team will have a timing chip and must be passed from athlete to athlete. The timing system will add all the times together to give an overall time for the race for each team.

This event will comprise of 4 “mini triathlons” per team done in the order, swim (leg 1) /bike (leg 2) / run (leg 3) / swim (leg 4) / bike (leg 5) / run (leg 6) / swim (leg 7) / bike (leg 8) / run (leg 9), swim (leg 10) / bike (leg 11) and run (leg 12).

1.   How this race will actually work (Simple concept, difficult to describe!)

Appendix 1 – How this race will work in practice

The finish is located on the right hand side of the track.   SEE MAPS AT THE END.

Medals will be given to all finishers at the end of the race. Athletes who have finished their race can wait in the hold area until the last final leg athlete have almost finished and they can move to near the finish for their last competitor and run into the finish together.

Prizes

When the 12th and last leg of the race has been completed the team will filter to the right on the running track and finish under the finish inflatable be which is located on the cycle track / grass near the spectator viewing section you won’t miss it. 12TH LEG RUNNERS ONLY FILTERS RIGHT. THE OTHER TEAM MEMBERS CAN WAIT FOR THEIR ATHLETE AND ALL RUN IN THE FINISH TOGETHER BUT CONSIDER THE RACE IS LIVE AND KEEP OFF THE RUN COURSE.  You will be given finishers medals and a drink. A big smile as you cross the line is compulsory! It is vital that you remove your timing chip and hand it to the finish marshals.  Well done…. if this is your first Triathlon you are now a Triathlete!

At the end of the run in a normal Triathlon the runners cross the line and finishes. This is still the case in this event on leg 12 only which is the last run leg. However for the other three run legs (legs 3 & 6 and 9 of the race) the runner will have to make their way back to the changeover box which is located in the old transition area used for previous races under the TE Gazeebo towards the pool. They then change the timing chip and the next athlete continues towards the pool exit the door which the previous athlete came out of the pool and walks to their designated swim lane. If the same athlete is starting the next triathlon after the run leg, they can go straight to the changeover box, change and get back into the pool if they are doing a swim leg immediately after a run leg!

The Finish

The run course will follow the cycle track and athletes MUST stay on the track all the way round. Marshals will try and count laps with the following number of laps 1, 2, 3,4( 4 being the maximum run distance) depending on the age category. See Appendix table later. So please be sure you know how many laps of which course you have to run.

The number of laps required is listed in appendix 1 for all disciplines swim, bike and run see below.

• You will leave transition on a clearly marked pathway at the bottom of transition same as swim in and joining the cycle track for the 400 meter run lap. Marshals will direct you at the end of the lap onto your next lap, towards the changeover box for your next athlete or the last athlete towards the FINISH.

WATER STATIONThere will be a water station located at a point just after the start of the run, which is also where the run laps pass too so there will be the opportunity to take water at each lap.

The Run

                • Team Managers will be asked to count their team members bike laps to aid the event organisers.

                • Marshals will be there to help you in transition if required.

                • It is YOUR responsibility to count the correct number of bike laps but we will try and count for you.

                • For competitor safety, time penalties will be issued for helmet violations.

• DO NOT undo or take off your helmet until your bike is back in the racking.

•  After completing the required number of laps (which is now a 600 meter lap section of the track), you must dismount your bike before the clearly marked DISMOUNT line and push your bike back into transition, which is the same as swim in.

                • Please note this is a NON-DRAFTING race. Time penalties will be given if competitors are seen to be drafting.

                • On collecting your bike, you will leave transition and turn RIGHT so that you cycle the course        ANTICLOCKWISE. There will be a clearly marked MOUNT line, which you must cross before mounting your bike.

• DO NOT touch your bike until your helmet is on and fastened.

The Bike

• Although there are length counter marshals, it is YOUR responsibility to swim the correct number of lengths.

• Tumble turns WILL BE ALLOWED, but care must be taken to avoid the other competitor in your lane. No diving.

• You will be told which lane you are to swim in.

• A briefing will be given to each wave before they start.

• Please be at poolside no later than 15 minutes before your start time, ensuring your bike has been racked in transition.

The Swim

Bikes and equipment should be removed from transition as soon as possible after your race has finished so the racking can be used for the next wave, not to critical this year due to low entry numbers. Marshals will ensure that there is no interference to those still racing. For security, your race number will be required to collect your bike.

For security and safety no spectators or parents will be able to access the transition area AT ANY TIME or onto the track. Marshals will be on hand to assist the children if required along with Team Managers. This year there is no need to assemble on the grass behind the TE Gazeebo. Club Gazeebo’s can be assembled in this area also, please be sensible and secure them and make sure they don’t interfere with the races and athletes.

The transition marshals will let you know your specific location when you come to rack. Your bike should ideally be racked no later than 30 minutes before your race start. Transition is on the track so please take care when walking to transition if there are live races in progress.

Transition will open at 8.15 am.  Bikes will be racked in specific areas 1 rack per team of 4.The Go Tri athletes will be racked in waves dependent on entries. A racking plan will be issued with the final race details. Please have helmet on and fastened on entering transition please. Please make sure they fit correctly not too loosely, with 2 fingers only being able to fit between the strap and your chin. (See helmet fitting document at the end.)

Transition - Bike Racking - Bike Retrieval

Anyone wishing to take pictures or video of the event must sign the relevant paperwork at registration and display the “Authorized Photographer” sicker on their person.

Photography

Team Managers will be asked to number their teams with the relevant race number, on their right arm and the right leg. Please remember to return the pen when you have finished.

· When putting the bike number on the bike please make sure it can be seen clearly from the front (relay teams) attached with cable ties as this will be used by marshals during the race. PLEASE WRAP THE NUMBER ROUND THE SEAT POST TO THE REAR SO IT’S VISABLE (individual go tri athletes)  AS MARSHALLS WON’T BE ABLE TO READ IT AND LAP COUNT.

A bike number for each competitor with just the team number on for security and hopefully lap counting.
